As for that idiot Noah…

What would you do if all the prophets were telling you there is a great flood coming but then in the last ten years more oil has been discovered in the Permian basin in Texas than there is in Saudi Arabia and astronomical amounts of fractable gas not to mention quite a bit in Lancashire?  Would you say those prophets are ignorant scare mongers my grandma says there were floods when she was a girl and anyway I read an article saying it was all nonsense in The Daily Mail and as for that idiot Noah trying to build...

Vegan or Not?

There is no question that we should all be eating less meat.  Or is it better to eat no meat? The greatest  advantage of being a vegan is that it takes much less land to feed a vegan than a meat eater.  If everyone were a vegan the world could easily feed itself and there would be plenty of room for wild life.  You might well think too that despite the sticker humane, taking animals out of their fields and carting them off to death camps is extremely inhumane.  Added to which the health benefits are considerable and (unexpectedly...

Dear Mr Hitler, Just in case…

Many Brexit supporters are suffering from the delusion that after Brexit we will all pull together just as we did in the Second World War.  They have forgotten the baleful legacy of Mrs Thatcher.  We are so much less moral a nation now than we were then - MPs fiddling expenses, not dig for victory but large-scale farm thefts, knife crime at an all-time high, no old maids biking through the mist to church but a third of adolescent girls psychologically ill - there is little hope of that.  Rees-Mogg's investment firm moving to Ireland is like Churchill writing...

The Path not taken

from The Guardian 31/07/18 We know now that the fossil fuel extraction industry has known about climate change since at least 1977, when James L Black, a scientist at Exxon, gave a presentation to the company’s board detailing his research into global warming. A year later, in 1978, Black would write a memo saying: “Present thinking holds that man has a time window of five to 10 years before the need for hard decisions regarding changes in energy strategies might become critical.” But by the time this 10-year window closed in 1988, the energy companies had been pouring money not into...

Read Lynas

The government has recently given permission for fracking to go ahead in Lancashire. You do wonder if the minister has read the academic papers on fracking - Cornell 2009, Harvard 2012 and Tyndall - all of which agree that fracking is far worse for the environment than conventional drilling because of the increased methane emissions. Methane is 72 times worse a greenhouse gas over twenty years than CO2. Not only is the Government leading us into the disaster of Brexit but the immense, unimagineably terrible climate catastrophe. If you want an insight into the horror that's coming read Mark...

Earth’s resources drying up

Earth's resources consumed in ever greater destructive volumes Study says the date by which we consume a year’s worth of resources is arriving faster Jonathan Watts Mon 23 Jul 2018 00.01 BST Shares 2541 Drought at Rawal Lake in Pakistan during June 2018. On current trends, next year could mark the first time, the planet’s budget is busted in July Photograph: Anadolu Agency/Getty Humanity is devouring our planet’s resources in increasingly destructive volumes, according to a new study that reveals we have consumed a year’s worth of carbon, food, water, fibre, land and timber in a record 212 days. As a result, the Earth Overshoot Day – which...

First sceptical argument

First Sceptical Argument.  The scientists are divided on the issue.  There are large numbers of them trying to alarm us about global warming because they want to attract grants and funding.   Answer. It is true that the scientists are divided, but only in the sense that 100 can be divided into 75 and 25. The sceptics quote scientists who support them and lists of names sound impressive, but these are always in fact quite a small minority.  Against this, we must put the 2,500 working for the International Panel on Climate Change at which Melanie Phillips scoffs so much.  The...

E mail from Jeremy Leggett

from Jeremy Leggett Friends, colleagues and esteemed contacts Many of us have found difficulty believing some of the things that have emerged in the world of tech these past few years. I have collated and analysed a precis, designed specifically for the busy person who is interested but unable to follow the rapid pace of play too closely by dint of vocational, or other family overload. You can view it here. I really hope you will find it useful. Going forward I will continue to offer a precis collation of the saga, in holistic context, on my website as it unfolds, on...

Humane and enlightened liberals

Just as the S.S. killed people in gas chambers and did not think of themselves as committing a horrific crime but, on the contrary, persuaded themselves that they were performing a noble deed on behalf of the Reich, so ordinary people shopping in supermarkets who buy food that is cheap because of pesticide use (or at least it would be cheap if the supermarkets were not addicted to making billions of pounds profit) thereby helping to wipe out birds, bees and butterflies and playing their part in the destruction of nature - we are on track to destroy at...
